Although there is a genetic predisposition, it is strongly influenced by lifestyle, and in most cases, it can be prevented or much better managed through lifestyle changes.)

❗Before we begin, a personal note.
My father was a strong, hardworking man who helped build Brasília. For more than 70 years of his life, he had virtually no major health problems. However, over the years, type 2 diabetes and excess abdominal fat led to a cascade of complications. At age 79, he was living with about seven different conditions, and diabetes was one of the main underlying conditions that contributed to his death.
That experience had a profound impact on my life. It was one of the reasons I began to study diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic diseases in greater depth. I came to understand, through personal experience, that diabetes rarely occurs in isolation: it often paves the way for countless other diseases. Since then, my mission has been to help other people and families avoid going through the same thing.

✅The most effective way to control blood sugar and combat insulin resistance is to make lifestyle changes: reducing excess carbohydrates, exercising regularly (especially exercises that preserve or increase muscle mass), staying well-hydrated, getting adequate sleep, and managing excess body fat.

✅Type 2 diabetes usually begins many years before blood glucose levels rise. Insulin resistance can go unnoticed for quite some time, causing progressive damage to the body.

✅What worries me most about diabetes are:
1 – Its ability to chronically weaken the body, making it increasingly susceptible to other diseases and complications.
2 – Brain insulin resistance (“type 3 diabetes”), which is strongly associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive decline.

✅Except in emergency situations, in most cases it is not enough to simply control blood glucose levels with medication. It is also important to investigate and treat the underlying causes that contributed to the development of the disease. Often, high blood glucose and hyperinsulinemia (especially the latter) are merely signs of a deeper metabolic problem. Controlling blood glucose alone can be like “putting out the smoke” without fighting the fire that continues to fuel the disease.

✅Insulin resistance, leptin resistance, excess body fat (primarily visceral fat), hormonal imbalances, excess cortisol, chronic inflammation, sleep apnea, sleep deprivation, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can cause or worsen diabetes.

✅The greater the amount of body fat—especially abdominal fat—the higher the risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes tends to be.

✅The greater your muscle mass, the greater your ability tends to be to remove glucose from the bloodstream and improve insulin sensitivity. That’s why muscle-strengthening exercises are great allies in prevention and treatment.

✅Medications are extremely important for many patients, but they are rarely a substitute for a healthy diet, physical activity, quality sleep, stress management, and other healthy habits.

✅ When a person significantly reduces the amount of carbohydrates in their diet, it may be necessary to adjust the dosage of certain diabetes medications to prevent episodes of hypoglycemia. This should always be done in consultation with a doctor, never on your own.

✅In carefully selected patients, strategies such as a low-carbohydrate diet (LCHF), the ketogenic diet, and intermittent fasting can provide significant benefits when properly prescribed and monitored by a qualified professional.

✅ An unhealthy lifestyle remains the leading cause and one of the biggest contributing factors to type 2 diabetes worldwide.
