In a report that discusses the results of the research, a doctor says: \u201cWe know that the excessive use of antibiotics is harmful and that, in fact, they have been over-prescribed, often unnecessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researcher Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello, one of the authors of the study and a professor at New York University School of Medicine, warns that drugs should only be used when they are really necessary. \u201cAntibiotics should only be used when the benefits outweigh the costs.
