Little was said about T3, which is fundamental. For more information on T3, visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/icaro.med.br\/t3\/\">https:\/\/icaro.med.br\/t3\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 - However, it is important to know that \u201cthe skin contains 20% of all the iodine in the body, 32% is in the muscles and 35% is in the fatty tissue. Iodine is present in various parts of the body, but tends to accumulate in the glandular tissues, being in the thyroid and prostate in men, and in the thyroid, breasts and ovaries in women.\u201d In addition, iodine is essential for immunity and sweating, which is fundamental for controlling body temperature and detoxification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3 - Therefore, adequate iodine levels are fundamental to health in many different ways, but this information is generally only taught in good postgraduate courses. Many health professionals still don't have access to this knowledge or don't accept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4 - There are arguments that the iodine intake of the Brazilian population is excessive, but ingesting a nutrient does not guarantee that it will be absorbed by the intestines, metabolized and incorporated into the body in the correct way. In addition, they commented that Brazilian children, in a 2001 study, excreted a lot of iodine in their urine. However, measuring excretion alone does not ensure that iodine is sufficient or in excess where it is needed. In my practice, I have seen a majority of patients with iodine deficiency and compatible symptoms. This is easily detected by appropriate measurements on the skin (an examination I carry out in the office) and in saliva. Blood and urine tests also identify this, not just in terms of whether the levels are acceptable, but whether they are optimal. After all, who wants to have only \u201cacceptable\u201d health? Everyone wants optimum health, which is why the tests should follow the same standard of excellence, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5 - In the body, there are tissues that use iodine and others that use iodide. Therefore, optimal supplementation, when necessary, should include both, something that is little considered. In addition, for iodine to be properly assimilated by the body, the general body pH, and especially that of the blood, needs to be within acceptable limits for each tissue. Extremes of pH can prevent iodine, even if properly ingested, from reaching where it is needed or functioning correctly. The body has various systems for maintaining pH balance, such as buffer systems, but these systems can be ineffective in the face of a large regular toxic load, malnutrition and poor lifestyle habits. They play distinct roles in the body, which explains why they are often combined in various supplementation strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are the key points for understanding this difference and the rationale for using them together\u2014obviously when the patient requires replacement, which is common:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1\ufe0f\u20e3 Fundamental Differences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Potassium iodide (KI):<\/strong> It is an inorganic form of iodine. It has high bioavailability and is the form preferred by the thyroid gland for taking up iodine via the sodium-iodide symporter (NIS), contributing to the synthesis of the hormones T3 and T4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Iodine, often referred to as \u201cchelated iodine\u201d or molecular iodine:<\/strong> It is the elemental form, I\u2082. Different tissues in the body have distinct affinities for iodine. While the thyroid preferentially uses iodide, other tissues\u2014such as the breasts, prostate, stomach, and salivary glands\u2014have a significant demand for molecular iodine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2\ufe0f\u20e3 Why is this association considered more \u201ccomprehensive\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rationale behind this combination, often found in solutions such as Lugol's solution or in specific compounded formulations, is related to tissue tropism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Synergy between tissues:<\/strong> Because different glands and organs utilize iodine in different ways, providing only potassium iodide may meet the thyroid\u2019s needs but leave other tissues with a deficiency of molecular iodine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Enrollment via the NIS:<\/strong> The physiological understanding is that the body benefits from the presence of both forms in order to adequately meet iodine needs throughout the body, not just in the thyroid system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3\ufe0f\u20e3 Important Considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the association is used to provide broader coverage, it is essential to consider the following aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Thyroid function:<\/strong> Iodine supplementation should not be administered indiscriminately. In patients with thyroid autoimmunity, such as those with Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis, the inappropriate use of iodine or iodide can, in some cases, exacerbate inflammation of the gland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Dose:<\/strong> Excess iodide can temporarily block the production of thyroid hormones, a phenomenon known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. This is a self-regulatory mechanism that, when chronically stimulated, can be harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2733\ufe0f Individualization:<\/strong> The decision to prescribe the chelated form, the iodide, or a combination of both depends on the patient\u2019s profile, urinary iodine levels, lifestyle, and medical history, especially when there are preexisting thyroid disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In summary, from the perspective of systemic distribution, combining the two forms may provide more comprehensive coverage for iodine-dependent tissues.
