Two antioxidant substances may be the answer to infertility due to endometriosis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two substances, widely used by sportspeople as dietary supplements, may be the answer to a very common type of infertility, that caused by endometriosis. They are N-acetylcysteine (a medication for respiratory diseases) and L-carnitine, or vitamin B11, which is produced in small quantities by the human body and found in various types of meat, dairy products and some vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With already recognized antioxidant powers, the substances surprised researchers from the Human Reproduction Sector of USP's Ribeir\u00e3o Preto Medical School (FMRP) by promoting the maturation of bovine eggs in a culture system in vitro <\/em>which contained follicular fluid from women infertile due to endometriosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gynaecological disease that affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, endometriosis is characterized by \u201cretrograde menstruation\u201d, in which cells from the inner layer of the uterus (endometrium) are thrown out into the abdominal cavity with menstrual bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The causes of the disease are not yet fully understood. It is known that retrograde menstruation is common in 90% women, but not all of them develop endometriosis, and that, in addition to intense cramps, the disease can cause infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FMRP researchers have been studying endometriosis and ways of treating the main complaints of those who suffer from the disease (pelvic pain and infertility). And it was while studying the follicular fluid of these women that researcher Vanessa Silvestre Innocenti Giorgi found that the \u201coxidative stress\u201d present in the fluid worsened the quality of the future egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
