Understand that the main causes of illness in the elderly are:

Dehydration (most people drink less water than they should because they expect to feel thirsty)

Malnutrition (poor nutrition - they often think they eat properly, but in fact they don't)

Sedentary lifestyle

✅ Lack of brain activity, “jobs”, tasks, challenges and pleasurable activities

Social isolation

Individuality matters
Each elderly person has specific needs. Care must be personalized, respecting their unique characteristics.

Love and affection are essential
The elderly need more than physical and financial care; they need sensitive attention, love and emotional connection.

Competent medical supervision
Experienced doctors who are attentive to the particularities of ageing are essential. Small disorders should not be ignored, as they can develop rapidly.

Encourage independence
As far as possible, encourage the elderly person to perform important tasks to maintain a sense of usefulness and social inclusion.

Take care of your appearance and personal interests
Encourage them to take care of themselves, their appearance and to get involved in activities that bring them satisfaction.

Nutritional monitoring
A nutritionist can balance the diet and prevent problems arising from poor nutrition.

Sleep regulation
Avoid excessive naps during the day, as they are detrimental to nighttime sleep, which is more restorative.

Re-evaluation of medicines and supplements
Medicines should be periodically reviewed to avoid interactions, side effects and unnecessary use.

Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
If it's not possible to stop, drastically reducing it will bring great benefits.

Psychological support
It may be necessary to deal with feelings such as disinterest in life or fear of approaching death.

However, in my opinion, unfortunately, these and other important precautions are not routinely observed or followed. When it comes to “how to treat the elderly”, what I see most often in medicine is something like this, from most of the colleagues I've talked to: “The older you get, the less it's worth investing in... The main idea is to avoid too many tests, too many procedures, too many treatments and let them live the rest of their lives to the fullest, as they wish.”

Curiously, however, when doctors with this mentality witness the loss of functionality (memory, interaction, independence, etc.) of loved ones, they come to the office asking for “investment”: of attention, of time, of energy, of “more complete” exams, of treatments... Even if none of this is “in line with official consensus”. After all, it seems that “pepper on other people's lips is refreshment” and, when “the shoe pinches” on us, even protocol seems to change, it's left aside, it's no longer as important, appropriate or even “considered Christian”.

Of course, I'll reiterate the obvious: not all doctors are like this, but I'll make it clear that most of the more “conventional” ones I know, unfortunately, think and act in the way described above, in practice. Something I disagree with: the idea that “it's not worthwhile or recommended to invest a lot in changes in the life of an elderly person who doesn't have many illnesses or who has them under control.”
