Health - Why take care of it?
Most people have never asked themselves these questions, mainly because the answers seem obvious. But are they? Let's ask ourselves a similar question in another way:
Why wake up every morning?
Well, the more “direct” ones will reply something like: ‘Waking up is part of human physiology, it's not a choice, it's simply waking up from sleep’, which is true: every animal sleeps to recover from the activities it has performed and prepare for new ones, in a continuous cycle. So we don't choose to open our eyes and wake up, it just happens for everyone. So let's delve deeper into the issue:
Why get out of bed in the morning?
If we all invariably wake up at some point, getting out of bed presupposes some motivation, some goal to be fulfilled. And even if you've never thought about them directly, you can believe that they exist.
And it's these objectives that essentially make the difference between getting up to live or to survive on a daily basis. But is there a difference between these concepts? Let's see, according to the dictionaries:
☑️ Survive: to continue to live after another thing or person; to escape; to subsist; to resist.
☑️ Living: having life; existing; lasting; inhabiting, residing; feeding, nourishing; behaving; relating to.
Frankly, according to these concepts, who would choose to “survive”?
So, except in cases of depression, if we all choose to get out of bed to “live”, the next question is, of course, why live?
A simple Google search about the purpose of living returns edifying, useful or at the very least curious results. For example, I found the following question in a discussion group: “Why live if we're all going to die one day”? And, apart from all the discussion that a serious approach like this would bring, as it seems to have been just to polemicize, I come back with questions along the same lines, such as: “Why eat and drink then, if everything will be disposed of later?” or “Why earn money if it will all be spent later”.
Returning to the internet, in the search for what people think are the purposes of life, the ‘ideal’ goal is: to love God and neighbor. Others, also mentioned a lot, are:
- Being happy
- Love
- Fulfilling your mission
- Being someone in life
- Leaving behind positive marks and deeds
- Well-being
- Realization
Several different purposes, somewhat complementary, but always with one thing in common: they all presuppose actively pursuing something, in other words, making an effort to achieve a purpose.
Whatever your goal in life, it's clear that one condition is fundamental to achieving it: SUBSIST. But how to survive? In a simplistic way, we recognize the importance of having relationships, family, work, religion, leisure and money. However, the essential thing for subsistence is undoubtedly health.
Without a well-functioning mind and body, how can you fight to achieve your goals and even enjoy success when you do?
In short, it doesn't matter how far you want to go, or even how much success you've achieved, all the money and status you may have accumulated, or all the capacity and potential you have: nothing exists, materializes or endures if there isn't a healthy body and mind to display these results or serve as an instrument to achieve them. And nobody is talking about having a perfect body, being a professional athlete or not having any signs, symptoms or even addictions, but simply about actively seeking to be healthy.
Right now, you might want to be on the beach, reading a good book, playing a game, chatting with friends, dating, sleeping or even at home doing nothing in particular; playing with your children, working, tending to the garden, meditating, enjoying a good meal, doing some sport, going for a walk or creating something. If your body and/or mind aren't working properly, none of this can be thought about, let alone achieved.
