Slimming - Have I forgotten something in the booklet?

Slimming - Have I forgotten something in the booklet?

I received the following comment via e-mail:

Good afternoon, Dr. Icarus.

Hello, Dr. Icarus. My name is XXX, and I really enjoyed your article on the harmful effects of slimming pills and the “skull” doctors. I confess that I'm very unhappy with my weight (lol), and I was thinking that tomorrow is my birthday and I'm obese, more than fat. I thought I'd take some medication to get rid of this thing that's bothering me. The text bothered me at first, I wanted so much to take these drugs and get rid of it (kkkkkk), but it really wakes us up to reality. I've tried everything and losing weight isn't easy (aff), but even so, thanks for the text, it wakes us up a lot. And if you have anything, even if it's homeopathic, let me know? Lol. Thank you.

ANSWER:

As you already know and as I've posted here before, I tried to summarize in an article what I consider to be fundamental for healthy weight loss. The result was the Healthy Weight Loss Primer, which you can read at the following link https://icaro.med.br/emagrecimento-saudavel/.

However, after receiving the above comment, I realized that perhaps I had forgotten to address other fundamental points or had not given them due importance. I intend to correct that mistake now. But before you go any further, READ THE LETTER, okay? Otherwise, many of the following comments may not make as much sense to you in the context of healthy weight loss.

Below, we'll discuss the basic causes of gaining unwanted and excess body fat.

1. Bad Life Habits: It is essential to know which habits need to be improved by everyone. Their consequences include:

  • Low or slow metabolism, leading to low activity (or the reverse), detailed in
  • Low muscle mass.
  • Psychological and/or physical stress.
  • Nutrient deficiencies or excesses.
  • Inflammation and increased oxidative stress (high damaging activity of free radicals).
  • Hormonal changes.

2. Alterations in complementary exams, without proper correction, can lead to all the disorders mentioned above.

3. Inappropriate use of substances (including medicines), causing poisoning and/or disorders.

4. Genetic tendency, which rarely leads to weight problems in isolation.

5. Alterations in neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which can affect metabolism, mood, appetite/satiety and other factors, as they are responsible for the connection between neurons.

6. Hormonal changes.

Why do I repeat “hormonal changes”? Simple: they can be the consequence of bad lifestyle habits (since hormones are properly manufactured, especially during sleep, only in organisms that receive the right quantity and quality of nutrients and water) and can aggravate these disorders OR be their cause. In other words, hormonal changes, when present, must be resolved, or the body will never improve or heal completely. Still in doubt? Then read on:

✅ When you mention that you want to lose weight, the most common thing you'll be asked to do is hormone tests focused solely on your thyroid, right? And while I agree that the thyroid is fundamental, you're not just made up of it, right? Your entire body is the result of a well-concerted orchestra that includes, among others, sex hormones, GH (growth hormone), cortisol, DHEA, melatonin, leptin, among others.

Very high cholesterol is indeed dangerous, but it's important to remember that many hormones that are essential for the weight loss process are derived from it. Therefore, the key word is balance, not an indiscriminate and abusive fight against cholesterol. For more information, visit https://icaro.med.br/colesterol-e-hormonios-qual-e-a-relacao/

Disorders of cortisol, known as the “stress hormone”, and aldosterone can cause fluid retention, which increases overall weight.

High cortisol can lead to muscle breakdown and fat gain.

High insulin programs the body to “put on weight” by turning glucose into fat and storing any fat in the form of triglycerides.

The more you eat, initially, the higher your level of leptin, the hormone that tells your brain you're full. However, when you frequently overeat, your brain starts to become less sensitive to leptin. This leads to satiety disorders and changes in the action of all the body's hormones, since leptin influences the activity of many other hormones, especially thyroid hormones.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a hormone with hundreds of recognized actions of its own and is one of the main sources of testosterone (and estrogens). Its reduction is strongly associated with weight disorders and various other problems in the body.

Testosterone is essential for gaining and maintaining muscle mass and activating the metabolism, as well as contributing to good brain and heart function. Testosterone also modulates insulin sensitivity: the less testosterone, the lower the sensitivity.

Estrogen without the balance of adequate progesterone levels can lead to fat gain and fluid retention.

When a treatment that seems well suited doesn't produce the expected results, there may be a problem with the adrenal glands (formerly known as the suprarenals, which produce many of the hormones that are fundamental to the proper functioning of the body) or the thyroid (a key gland that controls metabolism and thermogenesis), which have not yet been properly addressed.

Got the message? Let me summarize: in order to lose weight healthily and maintain a good body profile naturally, it is essential to have and maintain good lifestyle habits. In addition, correcting disorders detected in tests, such as deficiencies and excesses, especially hormonal ones, is vital to the success of the process. Do you understand why? Then the rest is up to you and your health professionals.
