Extra virgin olive oil is, by definition, very healthy for your health!
Extra virgin olive oil (stay away from others, including merely virgin or “extra virgin”) is one of the six healthiest foods in the world, according to Dr. Lair Ribeiro, alongside breast milk, eggs, coconut oil, quinoa and turmeric.
But did you know that your extra virgin olive oil can be FALSE and even harmful to your health, if it reaches you mixed with other oils of inferior quality or purity, as is the case with many out there, which seems to be common but is not warned about on the labels? See more here: https://www.foodrenegade.com/your-extravirgin-olive-oil-fake/.
Brazilian law seems to allow a large quantity of other oils alongside extra virgin olive oil, but these are still sold as if they were “only” extra virgin (giving the impression of being pure). How to tell if “what I have at home” is pure: As stated in the link above, there are no definitive tests, but you can, for example:
- Only buy brands from good sources and in dark glass jars.
- Let the oil freeze and see if it turns rancid.
- Check if you can feed the flame of a lamp.
If it passes these three tests, there's a good chance it will be “purer”.
I'd like to invite Brazilian manufacturers and the government to comment on this post, in case there are any inaccuracies in what I've written...
