Gluten - Caution

I held an incredible live chat with Dr. Denise Carreiro about the potential negative impacts of consuming milk and gluten. Don't miss the opportunity to check out this enlightening conversation!

In a recent live, held in January 2025, I had the privilege of talking to Chef Marcelo Horta (@chef.marcelohorta) about how to Transform Your Health in 2025.

In a live broadcast in September 2023, I had the privilege of chatting with Chef Marcelo Horta (@chef.marcelohorta). We discussed foods that can be harmful to your health and the reasons why it's essential to avoid them on your table.

This is a “summary” of my opinion as a DOCTOR, largely based on scientific evidence and on following tens of thousands of patients in my practice:

GLUTEN is harmful to the vast MAJORITY OF PEOPLE, through MANY different mechanisms #ProntoFalei.

However, a lot of people out there make a LOT of money when YOU regularly eat gluten-rich foods (even if you get sick from it) and that's why they spread the word that “Gluten isn't bad for you”, “It's a fad to talk about gluten”, “It's nutritional terrorism”, “There's no scientific evidence” (that's the worst one), “Jesus ate gluten” (which is a lie), “If you take it out of your diet, you'll become needier”, etc -. do you really think these people want to lose customers?

Now another sensationalist, biased and apparently poorly prepared news story comes out, with misplaced generalizations: huffpostbrasil.com/2018/07/18/gluten-free-foods-are-cheaper-and-less-healthy-than-conventional-foods-says-review_a_23484674/ - HuffPost Brasil ended its activities in the country in 2020. Therefore, the site is no longer available. It is important to note that this post was originally written in 2018. SOURCE: TWITTER/@huffpostbrasil –

However, I would like to highlight the remarkable Internet Archive - Wayback Machine project, an initiative that preserves a wide range of websites for future access. In this context, it is worth mentioning that the page corresponding to the HuffPost Brasil website is archived on this project's servers. If you wish, you can access it via the following link: http://web.archive.org/web/20180718232107/https://www.huffpostbrasil.com/2018/07/18/alimentos-sem-gluten-sao-mais-caros-e-bem-menos-saudaveis-do-que-convencionais-diz-revista_a_23484674/

In my opinion, these are the many flaws in the text:

1 - It only puts gluten down as something that is bad for people with celiac disease, but 20 to 30 times more people are ill with it because of problems caused by “non-celiac sensitivities”.

2 - Stopping eating gluten is an absolute measure in terms of improving health (because it reduces the body's overall burden of inflammation and intoxication): if a person replaces gluten-containing foods with industrialized foods full of “bad things”, it's a BAD individual decision - in other words, the ideal is for gluten to be replaced with healthy foods: those who choose not to do so are harming themselves by making bad choices, not by taking gluten out of their diet.

3 - Industrialized gluten-free products are a little more expensive because there is still less demand for them; it's a law of commerce: when demand increases, production increases and the price decreases. BUT there are many non-industrialized gluten-free products that are not more expensive and can be good options: those who are looking (really looking) will find them.

4 - Going off gluten and on to excess simple carbohydrates (and/or excessive total loads of any carbohydrates) is a bad individual decision, a common and very harmful mistake, but one that does NOT detract from the concept of gluten-free eating itself: those who seek good knowledge do not make this mistake that the article seems to be wrongly trying to make a mandatory association.

5 - The “journalistic” text advocates keeping gluten in the diet until the diagnosis of Celiac Disease is “closed”, but seems to forget that while this is happening, the patient is suffering dozens of symptoms, aggravating illnesses and will often not even have a proper diagnosis (many doctors barely know about Celiac Disease... Imagine if they don't even know about non-celiac sensitivities to gluten or how to identify and treat them!) Somewhat medieval, isn't it? People getting sick and suffering for a long time just to have a name for their suffering? Is that really so necessary?

6 - “If gluten isn't bad for you, you don't need to ban it”. Really? What about the majority of patients who only think that “bad for you” means gastrointestinal symptoms and not a LOT of remote symptoms, caused or aggravated? What about patients and health professionals who don't make the association between what they feel and gluten - If it isn't named, it doesn't exist?

7 - Most of the world's population, especially in the last five decades, IS SICK because they eat too many carbohydrates (sugars) on a daily basis: in other words, excess carbohydrates these days is not a behavior “only of those who eat gluten-free”; part of the general media and many professionals have tried to put it this way, but I don't know of any official statistics that prove that “those who eat less gluten eat more carbohydrates than the general population” or even that this is why they are sicker.

8 - Could it be a “coincidence” that this article came out just after #GlutenFreeBrasil?

Learn even more and better in these books (with hundreds of scientific studies backing them up): “The Danger of Gluten”, “Wheat Belly” and “Gluten - Toxicity, Reactions and Symptoms”.

Beware of what you believe... Nowadays, in order to gain an audience, they are even “appealing”!

GOOD FOOD is serious business and is the BASIS for real health. #DoYourPart: https://icaro.med.br/ALIMENTACAO/ - People who eat badly sabotage any treatment, any result.
